About Me
Hello! I am Karissa, an aspiring filmmaker fascinated with the medium of film and how it can spark universal change.
My interest in creative writing and storytelling sparked my passion to capture the nuances of global issues through documentary filmmaking. It is a credit to my exposure to Geography and Literature subjects in my former years that expanded my hunger to delve into complex issues. These social, political and environmental problems lay snug in the underbelly of society — it is the responsibility of filmmakers to reveal and recognise human’s greed.
My appetite grew as I participated in debates involving Afghanistan refugees during the 2018 HCIS Model United Nations, competed in the 2017 National Literature Festival, and thereafter obtained a CAC Chairman and Book Prize Award (Gold) for outstanding academic performance in Tampines Meridian Junior College. At the very heart of my education journey, my love for environmental documentary filmmaking grew due to my weekly indulgence in National Geographic documentaries.
I am extremely fortunate to pursue my interests in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI). As I continue to master the art of film, my work aims to educate and inspire global citizens to yearn for change in our fragile planet.

Microdrama Series: 阿福在哪里?(An 8-episode Comedy Drama)
When Ah Gong’s precious pet prawn, Ah Fu, goes missing during Chinese New Year, a joyful reunion spirals into chaos. Pa and Ling try to cover up the missing pet before Ma finds out!
During my time at The Story Behind , I was tasked to write a micro-drama script- correction, a COMEDY micro-drama script, a genre I was not familiar with in my years of scripting. Simply put, I was a pragmatist who was used to melodramas and thrillers. I picked up the pen and drew inspiration from when the funniest memories were fostered within the family — Chinese New Year.
Ah Fu’s backstory of being discovered as a live prawn during his cooking show was born out of my late grandfather, who was a great chef. Imagining the absurd out of a success story, Ah Fu became a symbol of Ah Gong’s spirit. Towards the end, we realise that the most important thing in a family is not cooking the perfect meal, a peaceful reunion dinner, or even glorifying a house pet. It is the people (or prawn) that we treasure in our hearts that make us feel most at home.
